Heritage Wine Tasting
in York, September 22, 2007
To celebrate the 175th
anniversary of the first vintage of Samuel Warren's York Wines,
the Town of York Historical Society has arranged a unique wine
tasting. This exceptional tasting will begin promptly at 3:00
p.m. at the historic Hillcrest Estate, 1940 Craig Rd., in the
Town of York.
Although the flavors of the
wines would be recognized by 19th century wine
makers, these wines meet 21st century standards; many
have won noteworthy awards. In all, eleven wines - carefully
selected for quality and appropriateness to this historic
celebration – will be served in several flights. Each flight
will be accompanied by carefully chosen hors d'oeuvres. Finger
Lakes wineries that have donated or discounted the wines are
Arbor Hill, Barrington Cellars, Bellwether, Deer Run, Eagle
Crest, Goose Watch, Montezuma, and Swedish Hill. Several
exceptional dessert wines are included.
Jim Kimball's String Band from
SUNY Geneseo will provide music from the 19th century
era.
Several dignitaries will be attending.
Livingston County Tourism Director Lisa Burns will speak about
the significance of Samuel Warren's York Wines for the county.
The Society is inviting many
media representatives to be present for two major announcements
that will occur early in the festivities. A major
historical announcement will show how the Society's
research has yielded results that clearly require the
rewriting of the history of wine production, both in the Finger
Lakes region and in the entire State of New York.
In its second announcement the
Society will unveil an artist's conception of a projected,
community-enhancing attraction for the Warren
Homestead and winery site, purchased by the Society in September
of 2006.
Proceeds from ticket sales will
help the Society to preserve and maintain, and to restore and
responsibly develop this landmark historical site. A total of
only 100 tickets has been printed. The price is $40 for a
single ticket, $75 for a pair. Reserve yours soon by
phoning (585) 243 – 3409.
Hillcrest can be reached by
traveling west from NY Rt. 36 on Craig Rd. There will be a sign
at the lane leading into Hillcrest, #1940.
Craig Rd. intersects NY 36
about 2 miles north of the intersection of NY 63 and NY 36,
or about 3 ½ miles south of the intersection of US 20
and NY 36.

This 1836 advertisement is
of historic significance. It shows that Samuel Warren was offering wine
from his vineyard for sale at a remarkably early date. Not only is it
earlier than the usual 1860 date mentioned for the beginnings of
commercial winemaking in New York’s Finger Lakes.
It is also earlier than the 1839 date that Pinney (who had no access to
information about Warren) gives for the founding, in Washingtonville, of
the first successful commercial winery in New York State.
Based on evidence now
available, it seems quite likely that Samuel Warren’s winery in the Town
of York, Livingston County, NY, was the first successful commercial
winery in New York State.
The ad’s focus on the
churches of western NewYork, and its appearance in the New York Evangelist
exemplifies what Pinney calls “the ancient tradition linking wine and the
church. . . .”
Warren himself was a devout Christian and active in the Congregational
Church in York.
